My love of the natural world has been an inspiration since I first took brush to canvas, or loaded film into a camera. I thrive on nature's beauty and sometimes feel that it’s a humbling experience to try and do it justice. I hope my paintings and photos can somehow add to peoples' appreciation of this amazing planet we call home.
In my travels, I’ve been photographing breathtaking beauty for thirty years. Only the last three of these have been devoted to digital technology, and as a result, I have a huge collection of images waiting to be scanned and introduced to the digital age. Keep checking back, since I hope to have a rotating photo collection here on this site.
My painting has evolved over the years, in technique and media. As an oil painter, I worked in the ala prima technique, putting things down in basically one layer, with very little glazing. I first discovered the joys of working in acrylics when at someone’s suggestion I tried using them in a watercolor technique, with the benefit that subsequent layers don’t dissolve what has already been rendered. I love working like this! Now, I love to experiment with glazing techniques in my acrylic work.
(As of summer 2010, I have begun to work in oils again, after discovering the absolute joy I receive from the plein aire experience! Painting outdoors on location has many challenges which I thoroughly embrace: the challenge of painting outdoors in acrylics isn't one of them. I find oils are much easier to transport, carry and keep fresh on the the pallette, under plein aire conditions.)
The world of color is my own personal vice. I cannot get enough of it: glorious salmon and periwinkle clouds at sunset, the vivid royal blues and aquas of tropical skies and seas… the infinite greens of a rainforest, I get lost in them!
A recent new medium for me has been semi-precious gemstones, and jewelry design. I love the energy that natural stones bring when one is in contact with them, and the array of colors and patterns in which they come from the earth astounds me!
